Barolo as we know it—an aromatic, full-bodied, richly tannic red wine—is generally credited to the early 19th-century estate of the Marchese Carlo Tancredi Falletti di Barolo. As the story goes, it was the Marchesa Giulia (née Juliette Colbert) who catapulted the wine from her husband’s vineyards to fame by sending King Carlo Alberto 325 barrels (one for each day of the year, except for the 40 days of Lent, of course). Here we have classic Barolo for a very attractive price: cherry liqueur and fresh tart cherry with earthy tones and firm tannins that meld nicely with a little air. Sustainably grown.
