A legend in the California wine scene, Mayacamas Vineyards is perched high on the slopes of Mount Veeder, at elevations ranging from 1,800-2,400 ft. The estate encompasses 475 acres, of which a mere 50 are under vine. Plantings have been farmed organically since 2013, and are spread across various soil profiles, including gravelly loam, cobbled clay, and both volcanic cobbles and compressed ash. The cooler mountain climate of the Mount Veeder appellation produces some of the lowest yields in Napa Valley, with soils high in acidity and distinctive minerality. The 2019 cabernet is a bold, dramatic bottling, with tons of character and intensity. Opulent dark berries are joined by layers of spice, mocha, incense and tobacco, with bursts of crushed dried herbs. Zesty acidity and iron-tinged tannins provide lift and freshness, with a lingering finish that ties it all together harmoniously. Decant now or cellar through 2045.
