“Sine Sole Nihil” (“Nothing Without Sunshine”) is engraved on the estate’s sundial, and appears on its wine labels to reflect the Costières de Nîmes’ Mediterranean climate and its influence on the region’s wines. Mourgues du Grès means “nuns of the stones” in the ancient French dialect of Provençal, and the estate was a former agricultural property of the Ursulines de Beaucaire since the 16th century. The nuns of Nîmes were famously known for producing wines that were served to the pope of Avignon. This southernmost Rhône region in fact contains vineyards covered with the same round, flat stones (‘galets’) that are famous in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Château Mourgues du Grès is run by Anne and François Collard, who have been passionately committed to producing distinctive wines that reflect the best of the region’s terroir for over three decades. They have practiced organic viticulture since 2004 (certified in 2011), and biodynamic since 2018 (certified in 2020), and make wines in a natural-yet-classic style, fermenting the whites and rosés in stainless steel and bottling with minimal sulfur. Floral, fruitful, and ultimately refreshing, this rounded white blend delivers clean-cut flavors of white peach, ripe pear, and melon with medium-low acidity and an oh-so-silky texture. Perfect for spring! Certified organic, certified biodynamic.
