There’s a quiet yet profound sense of comfort when a wine just checks all the right boxes. Within the wine world, there have developed archetypes, typical expressions of styles and grape varieties that can be at best helpful, at worst limiting and dare we say, tropey. The archetype of the traditional Napa cab is highly sought after and highly misunderstood. To craft a beautiful bottle, one has to possess restraint and a divine sense of balance. Overripe fruit and too much extraction and it’s gloopy jam, too much oak and it’s like chewing on two-by-fours and smoking a vanilla bean. Vance Rose, the head winemaker of Routestock, is deft at crafting pure, balanced expressions of California opulence without pretension. The wines are textbook and classic, a fantastic opportunity to understand technique and style at a slightly more priced to play price tag. Fruit for this bottle is sourced from top vineyards across Coombsville, St. Helena, Mount Veeder, and Rutherford, working thoughtfully and sustainably with a commitment to low-intervention. After a spontaneous fermentation, the wine spends 21 months in 98% French oak (a mix of neutral and new oak) and 2% American oak. Get your prime rib and mushroom wellington ready folks, we’re going classic tonight.
