The goal of Sage Rat is to craft “unfussy wine for the people.” To that, we say, “heck yeah.” Washington natives Dusty and Whitney are fierce champions of the Yakima Valley and established Sage Rat to highlight the area’s rich historical legacy, diverse landscapes, and unique micro-climates. Dusty’s over 15 years of working in the Pacific Northwest results in an impressive resume, with stints at Antica Terra and Seven Hills, and a position as head winemaker at Gilbert Cellars. Envisioning crafting bottles of access and quaffability, the pair focus on making crisp, low-abv, everyday-drinking wines that are destined to be effortlessly popped and poured. Their fruit is sourced from local growers who practice sustainability in the vineyard and provide fair wages to their workers. The ‘Roza’ is composed of graciano, a grape more often associated with Navarra and the regaled blends of Rioja than an elevated plateau in Washington. Moderately tannic with gorgeous color concentration and fairly intense aromatics, this wine lives within the nebulous space that exists between rosés and chilled reds. Think Westcoast cool kid Kool-aid cerasuolo vibes. Generously juicy, with jolly-rancher candied cherry-like qualities that are equal parts nostalgic and delightful. Not sweet, very fun!
