MORE ON THIS WINE

If you were to drive just an hour from Vienna - 10 miles or so from the eastern border of Slovakia - you will find the picturesque village of Loidesthal in the Weinviertal. Here, amongst a cluster of naturally tended vines, you may find three siblings, Leo, Viktoria, and Matthias Schödl. Their father has been a teacher of enology and viticulture for years, greatly influencing the siblings, particularly Viktoria who had spent a good amount of time in Vienna, becoming inspired by the natural wine movement that had begun in other areas of Austria years prior. Starting in 2016, the siblings began managing the work of the family vineyards, converting the historical family parcels to organic farming and beginning the first natural experiments in the cellar. In 2018, the first official releases from the Schödl’s new winery were issued and my, my, my, how the winery has blossomed. Ever the professor, their father guided their efforts in making thoughtful sparkling wines and this release rivals the finest of cremants (honestly, even Champagne, but don’t say it too loud or you’ll be haunted by the ghost of Dom Perignon). A natural expression of the traditional method, this blanc de blancs is composed of 85% base/vintage wine aged in neutral barriques and 15% of the reserve blend which comes from a solera of older vintages. 20 plus months on the lees creates a sumptuous and lavish texture; opulence without pretense. Richly elegant but with a zippy and pointed acidity that lends itself to age-worthiness. So pop now, or cellar for that special celebration, just make sure it’s enjoyed in good company (even if that’s yourself).
