Craig and Carla Hawkins have been doing interesting things with chenin blanc since they founded their winery in 2008. The Western Cape Province has long been known as a great location for chenin, though Craig’s treatments don’t often resemble classic South African white wines. From their vineyards in Bandits Kloof, in the mountains of northern Swartland, Craig experiments with skin-macerated chenins, as well as this delicious sparkling one. Produced via the ancestral method, with no sulfites added, this is zippy, mineral, and bright bubbly. Ripe green and red Anjou pear, along with Asian pear, meet white nectarine and honeysuckle, with a blast of citrus on the palate. Organically grown, low-intervention/natural wine.
