Venica & Venica is a family-owned estate in the Dolegna district of Collio. Located in the Friuli region of Italy's northeastern corner, the Venica family has owned the estate since 1930, and have had a reputation as winemakers nearly as long. Since the 70s, the family has ambitiously upgraded and replanted vineyards, invested in state-of-the-art equipment, and experimented with winemaking techniques. Brothers Gianni (agronomist) and Giorgio (cellarmaster) have been making the Venica wines since 1975, carrying on in the footsteps of their father and grandfather, the estate's founder. Collio is on the Italian border with Slovenia, and "Jesera" means "little lake" in Slovenian. It refers to the name of the vineyard from which this cuvée comes. This site is at the bottom of a cool valley, irrigated by the water that flows from the surrounding hills. 100% pinot grigio, this luminous wine displays a subtle copper hue due to skin contact with the grapes during fermentation. A far cry from your local pizza joint's style of pinot grigio, this is instead complex and subtle in character. Lush aromas of pear, banana, Acacia flower, and hints of fresh apricot yield to a long, crisp palate of candied pear, quince peel, and minerals. Good acidity keeps things fresh throughout the lengthy finish. Certified biodynamic, vegan.
