South African Sips
Hey, hi, hello, shop friends!
It's Friday. It's tasting day. You know the drill.
This week we're featuring three wines from South Africa, highlighting the range of winemaking styles that exist in a country whose winemaking history dates back to the days of the Dutch East Company. Did you know Dutch settlers were responsible for bringing the first wine grapes to the country in the 1650s? The French Huguenots played a critical role in wine production when they entered the chat in the 1680s, bringing viticultural skills and increased knowledge. Unfortunately, due to phylloxera, a pivot to large-scale overproduction, and apartheid practices that led to the establishment of trade sanctions, South African wine production grossly suffered on the international market.
What's the current climate? They're crushing the game! Come taste for yourself!
