All In The Family

This week, we’re talking about family matters. Specifically we’re analyzing the relationship between three powerhouse varietals - sauvignon blanc, cabernet franc, and cabernet sauvignon.

If we were to draw a family tree, sauvignon blanc and cabernet franc would be the heads of the household, with cabernet sauvignon being their brooding, overly-opinionated teen. Both sauvignon blanc and cabernet franc originated in France sometime in the 16th century, and cabernet sauvignon entered the chat sometime in the 17th century as a result of a natural crossing of the two. This familial connection remained unknown until 1996, when researchers at UC Davis led by Carole Meredith discovered cabernet sauvignon’s true origins through DNA typing. It’s like 23andme for grapes. How revealing.

We’ll be pouring three wines to highlight the distinct personalities of each family member. Are you ready to meet the folks?
