We love New York!
Not only does this place we call home boast world-famous fall foliage (wait- not yet!), it also has played a pivotal role in the history of American wine making! (For a deeper dive into our own regional wine history, check out our May tasting, HERE.) The Hudson River Region encompasses an area from just north of NYC up to the Columbia County line, with the ‘River That Flows Both Ways’ - actually a tidal estuary all the way to Troy - lending a marine influence to a vast array of microclimates.
Today we’re keeping things hyper-local, with three pours representing both the east and west banks of the river, and showcasing the grapes and apples that thrive in this unique area. A cider from Treasury Cider in Fishkill opens the show, with a captivating co-ferment of cider apples and cabernet franc grape skins from Fjord Vineyards in Marlboro. Speaking of Fjord Vineyards and cabernet franc, what could be better to soak up the late-summer sun than a sip of their cab franc rosé? And if that’s not enough cabernet franc for you, we finish with one from Benmarl Winery, also in Marlboro, which also happens to be the home of the oldest vineyard in America! Final Fun Fact: Benmarl Winery is owned by the Spacciarelli family, where son Matthew began as winemaker and vineyard manager (a role he still fills today) before founding Fjord Vineyards with his partner Casey Erdmann. So many intertwining threads come together to wind a tasty trail through our own backyard!
